Why This Is The First Thing I Do For Every Client
Before I build a website, before I set up WhatsApp notifications, before anything else, I set up the client's Google Business Profile. Why? Because it starts working immediately.
When someone searches "plumber near me" or "nail salon Randburg" on their phone, Google shows a map with local businesses. If your business isn't on that map, you don't exist for that person. A Google Business Profile puts you on that map.
I've seen businesses go from zero web traffic to 10-15 calls a week just from setting up their profile properly. No website needed. No ads. Just a properly filled out Google listing.
46% of all Google searches have local intent. Almost half the people searching on Google right now are looking for a business near them. If you're not set up, they can't find you.
Step 1: Create Or Claim Your Profile
Go to business.google.com and sign in with your Google account. If your business already appears on Google Maps (sometimes Google creates listings automatically from public data), you'll need to claim it. If not, you'll create a new one.
- Click "Manage now"
- Search for your business name — if it exists, claim it. If not, click "Add your business to Google"
- Enter your business name exactly as your customers know it. "John's Plumbing" not "John T. Smith Plumbing Services (Pty) Ltd"
Step 2: Fill In The Basics
Google will walk you through these fields. Don't skip any of them — completeness directly affects your ranking.
- Business category: Pick the most specific category available. "Plumber" is better than "Home Services". You can add secondary categories too.
- Service area: List the areas you actually serve. Be specific — "Randburg, Sandton, Roodepoort" is better than "Johannesburg".
- Phone number: Use the number you actually answer. If that's your WhatsApp number, use that.
- Business hours: Include them even if they're "by appointment only". Google shows "Open now" badges which increase clicks.
- Website: Add this once you have one. If you don't have a website yet, skip it for now — the profile works without it.
Step 3: Verify Your Business
Google needs to confirm you're a real business at a real address. The most common methods:
- Phone verification: Google calls or texts your business number with a code. Fastest option — takes 5 minutes.
- Postcard verification: Google mails a postcard with a code to your business address. Takes 5-14 days in South Africa.
- Video verification: You record a short video showing your business location and signage. Newer option, works well for home-based businesses.
Phone verification is the fastest. If it's available for your business type, pick that.
Your profile won't appear in search results until it's verified. I've seen business owners set everything up perfectly and then forget to enter the verification code. Check your mail or messages.
Step 4: Add Photos
Profiles with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more clicks to websites. You don't need professional photography. Phone photos work fine. Add at least:
- 3 photos of your actual work (completed jobs, products, finished nails, whatever you do)
- 1 photo of you or your team (people trust faces)
- 1 photo of your business location or vehicle (if you have branding on it)
Update photos monthly if you can. Google rewards active profiles with higher rankings.
Step 5: Write Your Business Description
You get 750 characters. Use them wisely. Include:
- What you do (be specific, not generic)
- Where you do it (mention your area)
- What makes you different (years of experience, specific expertise, fast response time)
Example for a plumber:
"Residential and emergency plumber serving Randburg, Northcliff, and Fairlands. 12 years experience. We specialize in burst pipes, geyser repairs, and drain cleaning. Available 7 days a week with same-day response for emergencies. WhatsApp us for a quick quote."
Notice how that naturally includes keywords someone might search: "plumber Randburg", "geyser repairs", "emergency plumber", "drain cleaning". That's not keyword stuffing. That's just describing your business accurately.
Step 6: Get Your First Reviews
Reviews are the biggest ranking factor for Google Maps. A business with 10 five-star reviews will almost always outrank one with zero reviews, even if the zero-review business has been around longer.
Here's how to get your first 5 reviews this week:
- Go to your Google Business Profile dashboard
- Find the "Get more reviews" link — it generates a short URL
- Send that link to your 5 happiest recent customers via WhatsApp
- Message them something like: "Hey [name], I'm setting up my Google page. Would you mind leaving a quick review? Here's the link: [link]. It takes 30 seconds. Thanks!"
Most people are happy to do it when you ask directly. The key is making it easy — one tap on the link, write a few words, done.
The Optimization Checklist
Once your profile is live and verified, run through this checklist to make sure you're getting maximum visibility:
- Business name matches your signage and branding exactly
- Primary category is as specific as possible
- All service areas are listed
- Phone number is the one you answer fastest
- Business hours are accurate (update for holidays)
- At least 5 photos uploaded
- Business description filled out (use all 750 characters)
- At least 5 Google reviews
- Services section filled out with individual services listed
- Q&A section has at least 3 pre-answered questions
- Posts section has at least 1 recent post (Google likes activity)
A fully optimized profile takes about 15-20 minutes to set up. The return on those 15 minutes is months of free local visibility.
