The Research
I wasn't planning to write this. I was doing client prospecting for my agency, going through Google Maps looking for local businesses in Johannesburg that might need a website. Plumbers, salons, panel beaters, handymen, electricians. The usual trades.
I started noticing something. Business after business with 4.5+ star Google ratings, dozens of reviews, clearly doing good work. But when I clicked the "Website" button on their Google listing, nothing. No link. Or worse, a dead Facebook page from 2019.
So I decided to count.
Out of the businesses I looked at across Johannesburg, Randburg, and Soweto, nearly two thirds had no website at all. Not a bad website. No website. These are businesses with real customers, real reviews, and real demand. They're just completely invisible to anyone who searches on Google instead of asking a friend.
Why This Matters
Here's the thing most people don't think about. When someone searches "plumber near me" or "nail salon Randburg", Google shows them a list. The businesses with websites rank higher. The businesses with optimized Google Business Profiles rank higher. The ones with nothing? They show up on page 3, if at all.
That means 8 out of 10 potential customers are making their decision before they ever call. And if your business doesn't show up in that search, you don't exist in their world.
The businesses that are winning right now aren't necessarily better at their trade. They're just easier to find.
The Three Reasons It Happens
Reason 1: "I get enough work from referrals"
This is the most common one. And it's true for now. But referrals don't scale. Your existing customers can only recommend you to so many people. A website works 24/7, reaching people who have never heard of you. It's the difference between fishing with a line and fishing with a net.
Reason 2: "Websites are too expensive"
A lot of agencies quote R15,000-R30,000 for a basic business website. That's insane for a one-person plumbing business. A good, fast, mobile-first website that captures leads can be built for R1,500-R4,500. It doesn't need 20 pages and fancy animations. It needs your number, your services, your area, and a way for people to contact you.
Reason 3: "I tried it and it didn't work"
Some business owners paid for a website years ago, got zero calls from it, and gave up. Usually the problem wasn't the website itself. It was that nobody set up their Google Business Profile, nobody did basic SEO, and the site wasn't optimized for mobile. The website existed but nobody could find it.
What Actually Works
After building sites for several local businesses, I've found a simple formula:
- A fast, mobile-first website with your services, your area, and a WhatsApp contact button. Nothing more, nothing less.
- A Google Business Profile that's actually filled out. Hours, photos, services, area served. Takes 15 minutes to set up, makes a massive difference.
- WhatsApp lead capture so when someone fills out your form, you get a notification on your phone immediately. Speed wins deals.
That's it. Not a R30,000 custom build. Not a social media strategy. Not paid ads. Just the basics done properly.
78% of leads go to the first business that responds. If someone searches "electrician near me" at 8pm and you respond in 2 minutes via WhatsApp, you've just won a job that your competitor won't even see until tomorrow morning.
A Quick Test
Want to see where your business stands? Try this right now:
- Open Google on your phone
- Search for your trade + your area (e.g. "plumber Randburg")
- See where you show up
If you're not in the top 5 results, you're losing customers to businesses that are. And most of the time, all it takes to fix that is a basic website and a properly set up Google Business Profile.
